SkyQuest (com.skyquest.app), published by Null Packet. Last updated: 26 September 2026.

In short: your exact location, your discoveries and your settings are stored on your device (your discoveries and settings can also be part of your own Android backup). SkyQuest has no account and does not track you. Only if you turn on the optional cloud forecast, a place rounded to about 10 km is sent to MET Norway. The app is ad-supported — Google AdMob serves ads under the consent choice you make on first launch — and a one-time purchase removes them.

What the app itself collects

Nothing that leaves your device. The sky is computed on your phone. Your chosen location, your collection of discovered objects, your reminder settings and your appearance settings live in local storage. There is no account and no sign-in. Uninstalling the app removes this data.

Location

If you allow it, SkyQuest reads your approximate (coarse) location once, to work out which sky you are under and when things rise and set. It is used on your phone only and is never sent to us or to any server. You can instead pick a city or enter coordinates by hand, or deny the permission and use the app with a default location.

Cloud forecast (optional, off by default)

If you turn on Clear tonight? on the Tonight screen or in Settings, the app asks the public weather service of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) for the cloud cover of tonight. The request contains your place rounded to about 10 km (one decimal degree) and an identifier of the app in the standard User-Agent header, and nothing else: no account, no advertising ID, no exact location. MET Norway sees your device's IP address as any website would. It is never requested for a guessed location, only for a real fix or a city you chose, and you can turn it off at any time. The data comes from MET Norway under CC BY 4.0.

Sensors

The motion and compass sensors are read live to point the sky map where you point the phone. Their readings are not stored or sent anywhere.

Satellite data

To predict passes of the International Space Station, Tiangong and Hubble, the app downloads public orbital data from CelesTrak at most once a day. This is an ordinary web request, so CelesTrak sees your device's IP address as any website would; no location, identifier or account information is included in it.

Advertising

The app is ad-supported through Google AdMob. To serve ads, and to collect consent where the law requires it (via Google's User Messaging Platform), Google and its advertising partners may process:

On first launch, where required, the app shows Google's consent form. Your choice controls personalised vs. non-personalised ads and can be changed at any time from Settings → About → Privacy options, or from your device's ad settings. Google's handling of this data is governed by Google Privacy & Terms. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings (Settings → Privacy → Ads).

Purchases

The one-time SkyQuest Pro purchase (removes ads and unlocks the Pro features) is processed by Google Play Billing. The app receives only whether the purchase is owned. We never receive or store payment details. See the Google privacy policy.

Notifications

If you allow it, the app schedules a local daily reminder on nights when something is worth seeing. This runs entirely on your device — nothing is sent to a server. The same is true of the reminders for satellite passes, eclipses and meteor showers that you can ask for (a Pro feature): they are scheduled and shown on your phone. Turn it off in Settings → Daily reminder or in your system notification settings.

Backup, widget and time travel

Your collection and settings may be included in the automatic backup of your Android device to your own Google account (your exact location and downloaded caches are excluded). The home-screen widget, the align tool and time travel work entirely on your phone and send nothing anywhere.

Children

SkyQuest is not directed at children under 13 and is rated for ages 13 and up. It is not part of the Google Play Families programme.

Your rights

The app holds no personal data about you on any server, so there is no account to export or erase. For the advertising data above, use the in-app privacy options and your device's ad settings, or contact us.

Changes

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above changes and material changes are noted in the app's release notes.
